The Shortlist has been announced!

Mark Cavendish
Tom Daley
Jessica Ennis
David Haye
AP McCoy
Graeme McDowell
Graeme Swann
Phil Taylor
Lee Westwood
Amy Williams

Who is your winner?

An almost impossible choice between 3 or 4 in my opinion.

Ennis, Williams, McDowell and maybe Taylor

As long as it isn't Haye and especially McCoy I'll be happy

A little surprised that Farah missed out!

Don't really know enough about some of those but if Swann has a good couple of test matches he could be in the running as he would be in the public's mind. Haye has had a good year but until he fights someone really classy he shouldn't win it. Westwood would be a good shout as he has got to number 1 but can't see him winning it without winning a major.

Ennis, McDowell, or Williams for me. Surprised too that Farah isn't there but so glad Murray isn't!

If Haye beats one or both Klitchkos then he should win it next year, and I agree with Eakes about Westwood. Great he's got the number 1 spot but I don't think he should considering he hasn't won a major. Like when Safina was number 1 in womens tennis!

My predictions...

Young SPOTY - Daley
Overseas - Vettel or Nadal, but I think Nadal will win it considering he's won 3 of 4 majors and became world no.1
Team - European championships athletics team, although wish it were Somerset CC but for all their runner up finishes!
Coach - Andy Hurry
SPOTY - 1st Ennis, 2nd McDowell, 3rd Williams
Congratulations to Woodies.

A P McCoy will win it

Also nice to see no footballers in there after the ridiculous decision to give it to Giggs last year

Would love to see Cavendish win it.

Haye should not be on the list.

Agree with Eakesy that if Swann has a decent couple of games he'll probably win. When is it announced?

RE Farah. I'm sure it was this year that I was watching him when he conked out after coming like 3rd or 4th in a race?

Don't start that debate up again JP!!

Good shout on Murray Dan. After all, he's only number 4 in the world and made the final of one grand slam, semis in another and was within a whisker of making the final of the ATP Masters......

I don't think Ennis should win it personally. She only did the Europeans this year didn't she? Amy Williams winning gold at the winter Olympics should definitely rank above that. Not sure what Cavendish has done this year other than win a few stages at the Tour - possibly Davo can expand on that? Kind of think he needs to win the sprinters jersey on Le Tour to have a chance of winning this.

At first glance at the list, I think my vote would probably go to either Tom Daley or Amy Williams. Olympic champion is no mean feat, even if it is at sliding down ice on a tea tray. Daley won the worlds (was he the youngest champ ever?) and from although I didn't pay much attention to the Commonwealths, I think he got two golds in that too? Pretty good year. I wonder if Tony McCoy might have a chance given he's been so good for so long, but I don't think jockeys have a great history in this award from memory?
Only BCFA team to beat BSXI 4 times since 12th December 2009.....

Not convinced at that at all!! He might have a decent shout at the top 3 if he has a decent couple of games, but having said that, surely there's only one more test before the award is handed out, a test and a half at the most?

He is the favourite, but I don't think he is a dead cert.
In my opinion he would be the worst winner ever if he does because:

a) Horse racing exists for the sole purpose of betting.
b) He is only the best in GB/Ireland
c) The Horse does most of the work.BigGrin
d) Think Horse racing is just plain rubbish.

Points a & b are enough in my opinion.

He's slipped down the rankings and hasn't won a major so doesn't deserve to be on the shortlist. It should only be people who actually win major things in their sport. So you should take out Westwood, Swann and Cavendish and replace them with Farah, Idowu, Turner or Greene.
Congratulations to Woodies.

Cav won the Spanish tour and 5 sprint stages on the tour. If he hadn't fallen off he probably would have won it.

Swann has been awesome this year and should definitely be in there. Flynn, what would Swann have to win to get in the nominations Eh?

I think Daley will win, don't think Ennis will be in top 3 save it for 2012, plus she didn't win it last year when she was world champ so Euro's aren't in same bracket. There is a chance of Haye and Swann getting in top 3 as they are the most recent achievements in peoples minds especially if Swann wins helps england win next test.

On a cricket point, usually if we win the Ashes there is a good chance of winning this, I assume that if we come away from the Ashes victorious then that would be nomintated in 2011 SPOTY so in that case perhaps save Swann till next year.

Amy Williams was a long time ago so as much as that is a great achivement may not be fresh for people.
Has seen 4 lads through his team become Christians in the last 18 months or so - How awesome is that?

When we might also win the ODI world cup as well.

Going back to cricket, England could get the team award - won the T20 world cup in 2010, beating those nasty Aussies/ First England team to win an ICC trophy so got to be worth a punt.

They aren't a bad shout for the team award. I think it's harder for someone in a team sport to win this, and I don't think cricket is that high in the nation's mind, which is why I think Swann is unlikely to win.

Alternatively, whilst those 4 have had good seasons, I'm not sure that many (if any) would be ranked in the top 4 worldwide in their sport, whereas Murray is. I agree that Murray hasn't done enough to win the thing, or even be top 3, but I think he's had a pretty good year bar the US Open.

I disagree, with the Ashes on, cricket is very much in the nation's mind.

Not sure that's the case with it taking place whilst we're all asleep. I haven't heard anyone at work talking about it for example....

I have to agree with that. It is rarely mentioned in my office too.
I think my vote will go to Williams after all the last two individual Winter Olympic Champions picked up the award. It has also been about 50 years since a British women won a W Olympic Gold. So I feel she deserves some extra recognition.

Yeah they aren't ranked so high yet have won major things within their sport. That's my point.
Congratulations to Woodies.

Nath your arguement about the ashes is rubbish, of course it's on the nations minds even if it's in the middle of the night. Silly comment.
Congratulations to Woodies.
