Less Than 2 weeks to go to the big night. Unfortunately I don't believe the new board facilitates Polls . So we will just have to keep a running total below our posts (see below). Another strong year with I would say 3 outstanding candidates. Much to Lewis Hamiltons annoyance I believe it will finally be F1's year and Jenson should take the main prize. My vote (being a huge athletics fan) will go to Ennis for her World Gold that followed a whole year out through injury. Haye will complete the podium. Prediction: 1.Button 2.Ennis 3.Haye. Running Total Jenson Button - 0Mark Cavendish - 0Thomas Daley - 0Jessica Ennis - 1Ryan Giggs - 0David Haye - 0Philips Idowu - 0Andrew Murray - 0Andrew Strauss - 0Beth Tweddle - 0

I laughed when I saw Giggs was on the list. I'll vote soon but don't think Button should win. Congratulations to Woodies.

I also laughed when I saw Giggs on the list. Bit silly really. Overall, it's a good list, and really tough to make a choice. I'm very torn between Button and Ennis. I was siding with Button this morning as he almost didn't have a drive this year, but I'd forgotten about Ennis' injury problems from last year, so now I'm more torn than ever. Ok, I'm gonna go for Ennis, largely because Button picked up the majority of his points when he only had one serious competitor as his car was better than everyone elses. Ennis dominated from start to finish and was undoubtedly (NB Simon Cowell, not undoubtably) the top performer in her event. Jenson Button - 0 Mark Cavendish - 0 Thomas Daley - 0 Jessica Ennis - 2 Ryan Giggs - 0 David Haye - 0 Philips Idowu - 0 Andrew Murray - 0 Andrew Strauss - 0 Beth Tweddle - 0Only BCFA team to beat BSXI 4 times since 12th December 2009.....

Personally think it should be a toss-up between Cav and Strauss. What Cav acheived in the Tour is greater than simply winning a World Championship in cycling terms and when you throw in his win in the Milan-San Remo classic it has genuinely been a remarkable year. No sprinter has acheived as much in the time I've been following road racing. Sttrass isn't necessarily an obvious pick, but when it comes to both character and acheivement its been a pretty remarkable year. He's gone from being dropped from the side to coming back and making runs under pressure, taking on the captaincy under the most difficult conditions and still improving his individual performance. He's then managed to lead a team to an Ashes win (claiming player of the series in the process - put these two together and I think they're easily the equivalent of a WC). The key thing is that he is a captain who has led his team to over-acheive. Vaughan, Smith, Ponting etc. have all been captains of great teams. A great team is relatvely easy to captain. England are certainly not in that bracket at the moment yet Strauss manages to get them playing well most of the time. He's also done it with dignity and a decent ruthless streak. Anyone able to behave with dignity in South Africa gets my respect! Ennis has done brilliantly, but I don't see her acheivement being any greater than that of Idowu and I don't think either of them warrant the prize this year. Don't see why Daley warrants a nomination more than the other World Champs from the Swiimming WCs. On top of that I don't think his personality has been great - why go to the national papers to tell them that you're changin school because you were bullied? Realise it was his dad that did this but I find the way they've engineered his press coverage unsavoury. He clearly has talent though and does deserve respect for that. Button? Ultimately I have respect for him but pretty much any acheivement in F1 needs to be set in the context of having a better/worse car than other people so that rules him out. On that basis, I agree that McCoy hasn't been included but think he would have been more worthy than Button. David Haye may win it when he beats a Klitchsko. I'll file Tweddle under the same bracket as the athletes and rule out Giggs on the basis that I think it would represent more of a lifetime acheivement award (something he richly deserves). Thats's my run-down anyway.

Good analysis Dave as always on the money. Don't follow cycling enough to comment on your analysis of Cav. I think your analysis on Strauss is maybe a bit generous to him though. We beat a fairly avergae Aussie team to be honest and in one dayers and Twenty20 we are still well behind the 8 ball.
I think Button would have won it hands down had he not limped across the line in the end. He had a much more competitive car than anyone else for the majority of the season yet only just won the title.
Tough call to make I reckon. As per the last few years I shall continue to boycott the watching of this event due to the distinct lack of sports highlights they actually show on the programme. Its never been the same since Brighton's finest (Des Lynam) left the beeb.

Andy Murray why's he on the shortlist? The winner of BBC spoty 2009 is a Tennis player who failed to reach his promise and bottled it on several occasions when it mattered most. Andy Murray... I think not. Cavendish/Haye all the way. But neither will win it. The only time you run out of chances is when you stop taking them.

He won't come in the top 5 anyway so don't worry about it!

I would love it (don't mean to sound like KK) if Manx Missile won, he only missed out on the Green Jersey this year because of a bit of a dodgy decision, where he had all his points taken away for a stage of the Tour de France. He made Chis Hoy (sorry Sir) look like a communter trying to get to work in comparison to some of his rides. Look out for Wiggins next year, not saying he will beat Alberto Contador but he will be up there.
Jenson Button, Nathan got it right he only won this year due to having the best car and no threat other than his team mate, who's car seemed to go wrong more often than his. Lewis Hamilton won the Championship in an inferior car, against a WC (Kimi) and what seemed to himself and the FIA at times. Not only this he was the first British F1 driver to win since Hill, the youngest ever, and he also broke the "race" (no pun intended) barrier being the first ever Black F1 driver.
Giggs, we all know about, deserves a knighthood, not a piece of metal junk from the BBC to join all his other awards.
Strauss, quality job in the summer and currently.
David Haye, hand to hand combat doesn't interest me, but i watched his last fight, so that deserves an award, for him.
Expected result
Button, Murray, Giggs.
It will only be the people that the BBC talk about on a regular basis unfortunatly.

Well, there's already a whole load of people whinging about Giggs getting the vote. My preferred 123 would have been Cavendish, Strauss and Ennis. To be honest though, I can't really begrudge him the award too much. Yes, it probably does represent his achievement over his career in a similar way to his PFA award but you can't take away the fact that both awards were voted for fairly and squarely and both his peers and the public have decided to give him this recognition. That's democracy. Ultimtely, people would have complained regardless of who won. I certainly wouldn't have been happy with Button or Haye. For those who argue that Giggs hasn't achieved much this year, a league winners medal, a CL final, PFA player of the year and the fact that he has managed to stay at the top of his game (in differing positions) is a pretty significant achievement. Oh, and for all those who go on about him not having a personality. People mistake a personality for simply being able to talk comfortably to a camera. Any player who reaches the top of their sport in the way that Giggs (and all the other nominees) has done has one hell of a personality and alot of character. Most of us would probably have voted for someone else but rather than whinging, lets just give credit where its due.

I've read it all now, Peregrine the voice of reason and not even one gay inuendo there either. Fatherhood really has brought a new maturity to his life. Shame.
