Yep, an excellent free signing, although the injury record is a bit worrying. When we have Babel and Kuyt on the two wings, he is clearly an improvement on that. Just hope he stays fit long enough.

Have to say I'm surprised though. Really thought he'd go to Arsenal or Spurs as they seemed keen and he could have stayed in London. Maybe Gerrard had some influence there??

Today's maths lesson....

£6m + Joe Cole = Yossi Benayoun

....apparently.

I think that's a bit of an overstatement!! There's been a bit of debate here at work as to who is the better player. I think Cole. Just hope he stays fit enough to prove it.

Also been reading quotes from him from June. He said he wanted a manager who believed in him, and he wanted to play in a central position. Does this mean he's likely to play off the main striker (Torres when fit)?

So currently, we have....

Reina
Johnson Carra Agger ???
Kuyt Gerrard Masch Riera??
Cole
Torres

....as a potential 1st XI??

Reina
Johnson Carra Skrtel Agger
Masch Aqua
Cole Stevie Milan
Torres

Although on the BBC report, it has quotes from Cole from last month saying he wanted a manager who believed in him, and that he wanted to play in a central position. Maybe Woy is planning to play him off Torres??

I know Liverpool have a lack of quality in the team but I don't think you can pu a whole team out on the wing Wink

What are you talking about Eakes? That's two teams Dan's got playing down the left. Wink

Pacheco is doing quite well at the European U19's. He scored both goals in Spain's 2-1 win over Portugal.

Lucas was captain the other day vs Grasshoppers. Deary me. I know most of the team were youngsters, but what about Aqua. Seems that Lucas will be staying. Excellent.
Congratulations to Woodies.

I haven't seen the full team that we put out, but I imagine he was the most experiensed member so I was not surprised. Agger, Skrtel, Carra, Gerrard, Torres (injured), Masch, Cole, Johnson and Maxi are all obviously on leave due to WC.

Not muc more experienced to be honest. One query, just checked Wiki to see him described as an attacking, penetrative midfielder, which seems to be what he was bought for. On that basis, isn't 19 goals in over 200 games a pretty poor return?

He got 66 in 222 for us which is much better than I thought.

Are people feeling a bit more optimistic now then? The signing of Cole certainly seems to have lifted the gloom somewhat, although he clearly doesn't mean we'll suddenly be comfortably top 4 again. Gerrard seems happy again, so hopefully that will translate into a much better season for him, which could actually go a long way to see us back in the CL. Just need Torres to pledge his future to us. Downside is that it looks like Masch wants out. Hope we get a decent fee for him, and that the majority can go on a replacement so we don't have to play Lucas.

Still need a couple of left backs. We were linked with Bridge yesterday, and I think he'd be a decent signing for us. Degen looks like he's going, so presumably Woy fancies young Martin Kelly as back up to Johnson?

Not sure how optimistic I'd be feeling. Here's a worst case scenario:

Gerrard - persistent injury niggles and poor form (on balance, I think Gerrard is more likely to have a bad season than a good one. Sadly, I think he's on his way down)
Cole - persistent or serious injuries
Torres - as above
Masch - departs
Carragher - has an even worse season
Aquilani - hardly plays

As I say, its a worst case scenario, but it is hard to get away from the fact that 3 of your crucial players plus Aquilani have a history of injuries, either serious or niggling, and also have serious form issues as well. In that light, you could argue that Aquilani has become a key player despite the fact he's hardly played for you.

Riera's gone - not disappointed in the slightest. We've lost nearly 5mil on him in 2 yrs.
Congratulations to Woodies.
