Davo1 wrote:Rugby can get away with the penalty try rule because, by and large, it relates to scrums being consistently bought down by the defending side. Because the set piece is re-set quite a few times by the ref it makes it an easy decision. Its very rare to see a penalty try awarded from open play (and these are frequently very contentious). But a handball on the line would cause a stop in play at the moment anyway. Only BCFA team to beat BSXI 4 times since 12th December 2009.....

So it's all over then. The final disappointed as a game, as I suspected. Holland lucky to keep 10 men on the pitch for as long as they did. It was a tough match to control for Howard Webb, although I'm not convinced he had a great game. Missed what surely should have been an obvious corner for the Dutch (although I can't believe they're complaining that led to the goal?!?!?), should probably have sent off De Jong/Van Bommel in the first half, didn't book Robben for kicking the ball away as it would have been a second yellow, but did book Xavi for the same thing a few minutes later........ Anyway, what's your overall thoughts on..... Player of the tournament Slightly surprised the Golden Ball went to Forlan, and also surprised at the BBC fawning over Iniesta (he played quite well, but I was shouting at my TV for him to shoot earlier in the game when he twice got in good positions to do so, but wasted it by trying to walk it in). My vote would go to Schweinsteiger. Team you most enjoyed watching Never thought I'd say this, but without doubt, I pick Germany. Goal of the tournament Van Bronckhurst for me. Biggest disappointment England almost get it for me, but I'm actually going to be more specific and pick Rooney. Should have been our best player. Didn't turn up. Worst moment Luis Suarez' handball to stop Ghana winning. Deservedly booed throughout the the 3rd/4th place play-off IMO. Only BCFA team to beat BSXI 4 times since 12th December 2009.....

Crap final. Really disappointed with the Dutch - if you've got players as good as Robben and Schneider then you should try and show a little faith in them. Player of the tournament: Disagree with Nath's comments re Iniesta - thought he was brilliant throughout - but strangely, have to agree with Nath's final selection. Schweinsteiger was a revelation. Had never rated him that highly prior to the tournament but thought he was excellent. Muller could have been in with a shout if it wasn't for his suspension. Most enjoyed watching: Chile! They were great fun. Every team should start playing 3-4-3! Goal of the tournament: Van Bronkhurst's was a great effort. Also loved Kaka's delicate throughball for Luis Faniano's goal. The first goal of the tournament was pretty memorable as well.. Would have to give it to VB at the end of the day. Biggest disappointment: Yup. Rooney, England, that Algeria game (still think it was a worse performance than the one against Germany). Maybe the biggest disappointment though, was that it was a finals with no truly great games. in over 4 weeks. Worst moment: Van Bommel's foul that bought him a yellow in the final. The most clear indication that the Dutch had basically come to the biggest game in football with the intention of ruining it.

Not a great final but didn't expect it to be. Spain deserved winners and the Dutch a disgrace. Thought Howard Webb did ok considering the task in front of him. He prob missed a couple more reds (De Jong, Robben - who he would have booked for kicking the ball away had he not already been booked, and possibly Van Bommel late in the first half). The Dutch are moaning about the number of cards - the number was about right, they should be grateful that it wasn't different colours! And it should have been a corner but it was quite a few mins before Spain scored! Surprised they are not complaining about not getting a free kick but IMO Elia was looking for it and it wasn't a foul. Kuyt says the number of yellows ultimately cost them the cup - what an idiot. Player of tournament - Iniesta for me. Class everytime. Alonso was unsung hero IMO, quietly did a fantastic job. Wouldn't have argued against Schweinsteiger, but don't agree with Forlan. Team most enjoyed - Argentina, apart from the quarter final obviously. Goal - Gio without doubt. Biggest disappointment - can't argue with Rooney. Also that there wasn't many great games, but I'm not disappointed that I watched about 58 of the games. Worst moment - Suarez blatantly cheating and then the celebrations on the pitch afterwards. Seen a replay - from the goal kick that should have been a corner, Holland for the ball back and attacked so shouldn't complain. Top of the league

I am amazed that Bert van Marwijk has the nerve to criticize Webb after the way his team approached the game, true he made some errors but in a game with so many incidents it would be impossible for him to get them all his decisions spot on. De Jong and van Bommel were lucky to be on the pitch at half time. Overall a pretty dire final and a rather disappointing tournament. It took a long time to get going and even when it did the excitment only came in fits and starts.

That's a bit ageist John. Ben, whilst it seems silly, I don't disagree with it. Italy were above us but have rightfully fallen below. There are no other teams that deserve to be ahead of us IMO. I did laugh at Uruguay being 6th, they beat average teams to get to the semis so doesn't prove that they are the 6th best team in the world. Top of the league

But they only lost 3-2 to Germany, whereas we lost 4-1. Although Germany did rest a few people for that game (how frustrated must Kose have been?). Only BCFA team to beat BSXI 4 times since 12th December 2009.....

I presumed he must have been injured, well harsh if they just rested him. Also, players don't defed the same they do in a 3rd 4th playoff. Uruguay had an easy route to the semi and if England had won their group, so would have they. Top of the league

I did miss the line ups though, so maybe they were all injured. Just assumed they'd decided to give one or two others a game. So, did England think they were in the 3rd/4th place play-off when we played Germany I'm now starting to wonder..... Only BCFA team to beat BSXI 4 times since 12th December 2009.....
