That can't be right, surely? Nath, obviously I don't remember every goal I've ever scored in graphic detail but I do clearly remember scoring 4 past 'Slip in a 4-2 win at Filwood, the first of which was scored when a 'Slip player pulled off quite a decent save on the line and we got a pen. Same thing happened for us against Santos this season (wasn't trusted with the pen that time). The season before, a Pips player did the same in an end of season game that was pretty crucial for both sides (we scored the pen but he didn't get a red). It happens. Its relatively normal at all levels of football. And to be honest, I don't think its that bad. And don't let the old codgers tell you that there was never cheating in days of yore (*cough* Ian Chappell *cough*). There was still diving and feigning injury, certainly less than now. The game was also much dirtier and genuine attempts to injure a player were much more frequent than they are now. The diving etc. is embarrassing, but I'd argue that football is 'cleaner' than it ever has been. I know cheating/bending the rules will always exist, but you can do as much as you can to prevent it. Just because something is relatively normal, it doesn't make it right. In all honesty, I've never thought much about this issue in the past, but I agree with Benjiman that preventing a goal scoring opportunity is very different to what Suarez and any other player who's handled on the line has done, which is preventing a goal. I would rather see a penalty goal and a yellow card issued than a penalty and a red card issued. There's always a chance a penalty won't be scored, and you can't guarantee that a team will benefit from their opposition being a man down. It's like with the Lampard goal. That was a goal, and the fact it wasn't given changed the match (athough England would probably have still lost). Ghana essentially had scored a goal, but it wasn't given because of the current rules. I'm also not convinced at the instinct argument for Suarez. Maybe if the ball had been going by his side and he'd slightly flicked out his arm, but he had to put his arms up above his head to stop it. How is that instinct for a footballer who's probably played outfield knowing he can't use his arms for his entire life? The player in front of him was trying to stop it with his hands too. I also wish FIFA would use more technology to correct decisions after matches. For example, the guy that ran into Kaka and went down holding his face when it hadn't been touched. It's a shame that we've spent a long time debating this one incident when we've seen a fantastic performance from Germany and a big upset with Holland beating Brazil that has barely been mentioned. These types of incident spoil world cups for me. Take 2002 - how many people can picture Rivaldo being hit on the knee with a ball and going down clutching his face? How many people can picture anything to do with the final? Only BCFA team to beat BSXI 4 times since 12th December 2009.....

I did wonder when someone was going to bring up the fact that this most abominable of sins is often committed on a BCFA pitch. And even more, this is the most popular offence where I get people saying that the ref didn't send the red card into the GFA so please can they be let off a suspension..."its only a handball on the line, not a vicious foul" etc. Luiz Suarez = Dave Flynn

really...? Can we do that? I didn't know we could ask to be let off suspensions...if only i'd known this earlier on in the season, then maybe we could have done a bit better...

Two of VCF's red cards this season were for this exact thing! To be fair to the lads in question - one actually dived to the top right hand corner to save a goal bound shot - his red card delivered swiftly, and then the resulting pen saved - VCF went on and win the cup tie scoring another 3 goals (with only 10 men on the field), but the poor young man who was only 'reacting instinctively' did end up being suspended twice - for league games (GFA suspension) and 2 cup ties, including the shield final (BCFA suspension) - poor form for an instinctive reaction don't you think...? The other one was a blatant, thought-out, premeditated slight movement of the hand from next to his hip to about 3cm away from his hip as the dirty cheating head of a CU turned to stop that ball going in the net - rightly so was he sent off and the resulting pen resoundingly scored (not by Davo1) and VCF went on to rightfully lose the match. This scoundrel was then suspended for the rest of the season and all of next. He'll only play again when he looks like David Platt... Maybe there is a lottery as to whether the penalty is scored in the game when this situation comes up, but, assuming the best available team of players is on the pitch when it happens, there is the suspension issue to come - the offending team will be weakened in their next couple of games or so, which may affect them in the league or cup competitions they are in. I can't see Uruguay being as strong in their semi without Suarez. VCF blatantly suffered without their players

Although you should be saved this pleading this season, as the GFA ban for handling on the line is 7 days (usually one game, unless it's Woodies in April, in which case it would be 5 games), whereas the BCFA's ban last season would have been 2 games (plus the additional GFA suspension if reported). Only BCFA team to beat BSXI 4 times since 12th December 2009.....

Whilst Uruguay are weaker for the semi now, but for the actions of that player, they wouldn't even be in the semi. Only BCFA team to beat BSXI 4 times since 12th December 2009.....

I think that definately in the last season of our league (more red cards were issusd than ever before!?) that the handball on the line to prevent a goal straight red has to be used at the ref's discreation; - accidental, if the ball stikes a player on the arm, hand (similar to a few penalties we've had against us last season) - purposeful, eg. VCF Santos attempting a full stretch dive to prevent a goal - no questions asked, straight red! Looking forward to the new season now the WC is nearly over. Bring it on. This might be controversial but does anyone find Spain a bit dull to watch? Yes they pass the ball around nicely and every now and then do something great but I find them very dull at times. Technically the likes of Iniesta, Xavi and Alonso are very good but I much rather watch players like Ozil or Robben. And also, I still don't rate Puyol as a class defender. There, I've said it, flame me down if you must !!

I know what you mean. You have to admire how excellent they are in possession, but they don't create a huge number of chances from it. Partly I don't think they always break all that quickly (Germany certainly seemed to have more pace in attack than Spain). But also partly, I think teams in this tournament know how good they are and have set up to make life difficult for them. Unfortunately, I don't think Holland are the most exciting team, so I don't think the final will live up to the billing it will get. Two very good teams yes, but both are built on being solid and difficult to beat first and foremost. I think it'll be 1-0 or 2-0 (with a late second for whoever is in the lead) in the final. I think the 3rd/4th place play-off might be a very good game though. Only BCFA team to beat BSXI 4 times since 12th December 2009.....

Agree with you Si (and Nath). Had high hopes for last night's game but wasn't particularly entertained. I think its partly because Spain are just so flippin good at retaining possession. There was a spell of a couple of minutes in the second half yesterday where Germany looked like they might get back in the game, good shot saved, couple of corners etc. Then SPain got possession in midfield and any momentum Germany had was killed off. Suppose that's why we enjoy the Premier League (and why we struggle at tournaments): possession changes hands so frequently that you always feel like you could be a few seconds away from a goal. Spain are brilliant, but they can be a little dull. Also agree about Puyol. Never seen a big man go down so easily under the slightest challenge (though he wasn't too bad for that last night).

My lads unanimously wanted to do pre season training last night instead of watching the game, sounds like they made the right decision. I don't hold out too much hope of the final being a classic, but I hope Holland win being a fan of Dutch footballing principles. I wouldn't say it was a bad game last night. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't high on chances and goals. And Davo, surely you're forgetting about Emile Heskey?? Only BCFA team to beat BSXI 4 times since 12th December 2009.....

Damn, as soon as I saw Dave's post I knew that was coming. That Sparky savagely tortured me, stabbed me in the back and kicked me in the nuts. There was no hint of a dive

Do actually remember that one. Can't remember if I was there as a Woodies player or a spectator. Either way, its the kind of thing that lodges in the memory. Apparently residents in the area were warned to expect aftershocks in the following days...
