Moods wrote:I used to play at St Matt's Wanderers way way back - interesting club! We used to train together with the St Matt's "proper" team which was full of great players, and no small number of really decent guys - Flash, Gary Andrews and Mark Y being among them! John V and another John (D?) up front were a real handful. Originally, training was great fun - where the coach (Neil Richards(?), I think) was excellent, but he left and it kind of turned into a St Matt's v Wanderers session, with Wanderer's being 'taught' a footballing lesson each week Tempers frayed a couple of times, I remember laying into one of them in the heat of the moment about "letting us all play sometimes!" after a tasty/late/trademark challenge! Those training sessions were great. Neil was a fantastic coach - I realise I'm still pretty crap at heading but before he spent some time with me I don't think I'd ever even conected with a header, let alone scored from one. My favourite memory of Flash was in his frequent battles with Si Johnson at Ashton Vale. Remember in one season both of them got sent off in both games for winding each other up so much. Personal favourite was when Flash put in a two footer on Si and got a straight red. As he got up, Si hurled the ball and hit Flash on the back of his head so got his marching orders as well. Oh how we laughed! Funny thing is that from what I've heard it was only Si who wound Flash up that much.

Here's an interesting Div 1 table from season 1997/98. St Matts running riot, Thornbury enjoying a decent debut season in the top flight but look at 'Slip! What happened Monsieur Chapelle?
LEAGUE DIVISION ONE 1997/1998 P W D L F A PTS St Matthews 16 15 0 1 83 13 45 Saltford 16 14 0 2 59 16 42 THORNBURY 16 9 0 7 48 42 27 Corsham Priory 16 8 1 7 50 45 25 Hanham 16 7 3 6 50 43 24 Rock Crusaders 16 5 4 7 35 38 19 Bishopston 16 4 1 11 19 37 13 Ashton Vale 16 4 0 12 21 66 12 Counterslip 16 1 1 14 19 74 4

No idea. You could take a screen shot of it, paste it into paint, save it as a JPEG, add it to your album on photobucket.com and then include it as an image...........but that seems like way too much effort. Only BCFA team to beat BSXI 4 times since 12th December 2009.....

If anyone can teach me how to import/attach an Excel file it would be appreciated! Now that would be my first season managing Counterslip! It's the glorious following season you want to look at when we bounced straight back with me and my old mucker Simon Barrow at centre back, we conceded 17 goals all season and 5 of those were in the one game me and Simon were missing, see I used to be good! And I might add, the first day of the sesason back in div 1, we walloped Hanham 4-0, playing them off the park. Hanham had gone over a season without losing a game till that point. Yep Strangely though, BSXI were getting pretty similar marks to the ones they get today ! Sorry, couldn't resist that. Obviously all in jest. On the subject of Solomon scores though, who remembers Exodus? One match against them was the only game where I have ever walked off the pitch. One of their central defenders spent the whole game kicking me, grabbing me, punching me, even when the ball was the other end of the pitch. I told him to get a life and he then faced up to me and accused me of being a racist. He then told the ref I was racist as well. In the same game, Paddy got spat at twice. They didn't hang around for a beer afterwards. Thought the league dealt with these issues very well actually. A real shame in other respects though as there's a big Christian community in St Pauls and I don't think they're represented in the BCFA (though I could be wrong on this - not sure where every team is based). Playing againsyt BCF was always a great laugh (although not so much when they played on that concrete pitch where the St Pauls Sports Centre is now!).

Yes Davo, I remember Tony and Exodus (which I think became 'Israel'). One game against them ended up in a fight ......between two of their players! And the pitches they played on were atrocious!

That was the season before I joined Woodies as we had just been relegated to Div 2 when I arrived. Some things never change though, Davo up the charts in the leading goalscorer!!!
Also interesting as I have never heard of Spartak Lackham and didn't realise that there was a Welton team prior to the Welstock reincarnation. Lackham were a nightmare. Played at the Agricultural College about half an hour down the M4 - worst pitch in BCFA history. Although it does have two memorable claims to fame: 1 - During one match I played there, there was a brief pause while a hunt ran through the field (not actually on the pitch, but would probablyl have improved the surface). 2 - And this is the big one.... this is the pitch on which Jeff Shelly (AKA The Bald One) scored his only competitive goal. Ever. Bear that in mind if he ever starts going on about his prowess up front! Won't ever let him forget who supplied the through ball either! Yes....I remember that goal...certainly one for the history books - obviously without such a great pass I would have never been able to get into a position to score the 40-yard scorcher Those were the old days of Ashton Vale - is Andy Dakin(?) still playing!!? Also big Gareth at the back alongside poncey Shaun and hit and hope Dakin up and down the wings from right back.... I also remember Counterslip from years ago with Derek Hadden & some short Irish bloke who had a temper and his face turned red frequently ...

Andy Dakin - yes, remember him, lovely guy but don't mess with him on a footie pitch. It always seemed to be soaking wet up at Failand when we played them. Hilarious - "that short Irish bloke". He also played on the Downs in Div 2 - can't remember which team. I have a classic photo of TBC V Slip with Ian Chappell and the Irish bloke in it looking like Little and Large which was printed in the Thornbury Gazette in techicolor - it's hideous! So what was his name Ian?

So what was his name Ian? Now you will be referring to the legend that is Paul Haveron. I saw Paul back at the start of the season, Paul is still running Portland Old Boys reserve team on the Downs. I went up there one Saturday afternoon back in Sept, Paul was kitted up as a sub and still plays!!!! Also pleased to see that he still has another Counterslip old boy Alex Preen playing for him. If I recall correctly, in the picture Chris refers to in the Gazzette, I was wearing navy shorts and not white like the rest of the team. There is a story behind that. The previous week a certain Mr Day was refereeing and not only told me off for wearing white shorts with navy lycra underneath (ie not matching) but also gave me the choice of removing the lycra or wearing navy shorts. I protested that it was surely better that the whole team matched but Chris was having none of it!! See he was like that back then too Someone mentioned Tony Douglas above. I spoke to Tony last week as I was short of players...turns out he and his family have moved to Bournemouth and are just settling in down there. Paul Haveron is a legend. Back in the days when I was capable of playing two matches in a day, me and Rhys (ex-Counterslip, Ashton Vale and Santos) used to turn out for Portland in the afternoons as a favour to Paul. Just to clarify a couple of your points: 1 - 40yd Screamer? Probably about 12 yards, which isn't even 40 feet! 2 - Paul Haveron's face never turned red. It was a permanent shade of Scarlett a la Sir Alex. Not sure if any of the old Ashton Vale lads are still playing. My favourite memory is of the touring side Ashton Vale sent to the 1998 World Cup in France (no kidding!). Minmum age of 35, played against fans teams from Argentina and Germany (and won!). They called themselves Bristol Cream to give a little nod to their home city. This would have been excellent in itself but they made it even better by their choice of shirt 'sponsor': Bristol Cream took to the field with a big Durex logo on the front of their strip!

Ian
Wow that is some memory you have that must have been the season that that bit was added. Cannot remember that incident but the law does state that if undershorts are worn they must be the same main colour as the shorts. Law 4 'The Players Equipment' Shorts.
Ah the memories
You may have noticed when watching games at Top level that if a player wears an undershirt below a short sleved shirt it is the colour of the top shirt. That has not got down to local level yet, but I would not be surprised if did in the near future. More little things for us to watch out for. The problem comes when a ref one week says ok stay as you are but the ref the following week doesn't allow it. The comments come " well the ref last week let me wear it"
I wish we did not have to worry about little things like that, at parks level it is about getting a game of football played. but we have to abide by the Laws especially if the man in the middle is going for promotion, the assessor will look for thngs like that.

Chris, how can you even begin to try and justify trying to get Ian to change his shorts in a public place? I thought that public protection was always the first consideration for any referee!

I can remember the Bog that was Lackham, very narrow pitch and I think it was just on the minimum width for a pitch of 50 yards, which gave 3 yds between the side of the penalty to the touchline. Clay soil as well with a big tree on one side and the branches got in the way of throw ins. Christopher

Chris, interestingly I was thinking about that rule the other week. I was watching a European game between an English side and an Italian side (I think it was the first leg of Juve v Fulham) and the Juve centre back had white shorts and black cycling shorts. Just found the photo, looks like they are full length trousers/tights, what is the rule there then??
